Massively multiplayer online role playing games have increased in popularity and in numbers over the years.  In this genre, a player can play alone at his/her computer, but play with and against players all over the world.  An individual can be on a team with people in a various countries, none of them having met except in the game.  Once a venue for fantasy games only, the available games have expanded to all genres, including sports.

MMORPG Basketball Games: Cyberdunk

Cyberdunk is a free online role playing game.  Here the player is able to join or put together a team and even negotiate his own contract.  The player can choose “Manage your player” or “Manage your team.”  If the gamer chooses to manage a player, the focus is on training the player, finding a team (of other players created by other gamers), negotiating a contract and managing the cyber-player’s career.  Within the game, players can win awards and trophies, break records, and be drafted or bought out.  If the player chooses to create a team, the gamer can start a team, design the uniforms, and even design and improve the stadium and facilities.  As manager of the team, the gamer is able to hire and fire players, draft new players and steal them from other teams.  No downloads are necessary with Cyberdunk, as the game is played on the Cyberdunk website, and there is no charge.  The game is designed for adults and teens, although it is child-friendly as well.

This game boasts over 30 million players in Asia alone.  Unlike the games centered around formal games and championships, this game offers a more colorful street-like setting and a back-up soundtrack including artists like Young Hot Rod and Lloyd Banks.  Players practice and gain experience playing in virtual pick-up games perfecting moves and tracking their wins.
